Tri Phasic Training and Knee Rehab

A training concept called tri phasic training is a method of exercise programming from Cal Dietz that I think provides a really interesting and useful method for the clinician and patient to extend their bank of exercises while at the same time providing a useful method for neuromuscular development.
This week’s exercise is the knee extension with elastic resistance. This exercise is a common exercise used in all clinics to improve quadriceps muscle neuromuscular function and its cross-sectional area. However, as well as an improvement in cross sectional area we are also concerned with improving the neurological characterises of that muscle interms of motor unit recruitment and the frequency of muscle fire firing. This is where a modification in the exercise prescription can prove very valuable.
