How to Incorporate Running Drills in your Rehab

Technical running drills can be excellent low level rehab activities. Many therapists not trained in strength and conditioning do not use this important intervention.

Running drills can be used by therapists as a part of a warm up routine prior to other conditioning, strengthening, ballistic or plyometric sessions in rehab. However, these drills can also be used as stand alone interventions to develop specific qualities associated with running. This ensures that you are time efficient and the patient is exposed to regular running practice early in their rehab.

A Walks and A Skips

A walks and A skips are very good examples of early leg recovery drills. A walks and A skips provide a stimulus for strengthening the hip flexors. They can be used as a conditioning tool to strengthen and groove the triple extension motor pattern used in all running activities. It can be used very eary in lower limb rehab programmes to encourage coordination between different body parts during movements that mimic the running stride.
